PubMed: Enhanced beta-cell mass without increased proliferation following chronic mild glucose infusion

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Characterized by the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells, leading to an absolute insulin deficiency and lifelong dependence on exogenous insulin therapy.

This study shows that glucose enhances pancreatic beta cells mass, avoiding sugar is the easiest way to make yourself "type 1 diabetic".

A potential criticism of mass increase via glucose administration is that the increase caused by cellular proliferation, which would indicate a loss of differentiation and specialization. However, the study shows that the proliferation rate actually decreased.
