How Long Does Selank Take to Work, and How Long Does It Last?

Two questions come up about Selank more than any other. How long until it works, and how long does it last.

No study was designed to answer either one directly. But three studies give real numbers.

How long does Selank take to work?

In a brain-imaging study, 52 healthy volunteers were given Selank, Semax or placebo and scanned before the dose and again 5 and 20 minutes after it. Selank changed how the amygdala, the brain's anxiety centre, was connected to the temporal cortex. (Panikratova 2020)

So something happens in the brain within minutes. What that study did not measure is whether the volunteers felt calmer. A change on a scan is not the same as relief.

In rats, the expression of 45 genes involved in neurotransmission had shifted one hour after a dose, and 22 were still changed at three hours. (Volkova 2016)

How long does Selank last?

The best number comes from a trial of 60 patients with anxiety disorders. The anti-anxiety effect lasted for a week after the last dose of Selank. (Medvedev 2014)

That is unusual. A benzodiazepine wears off in hours, and stopping it tends to bring the anxiety back harder.

A second finding points the same way. When Selank was added to the benzodiazepine phenazepam, patients had fewer side effects not only during treatment but also after the tranquilizer was withdrawn. (Medvedev 2015)

How long were the courses?

The study that reports a duration gave Selank for 14 days. (Uchakina 2008)

No published study describes taking it continuously for months.

What is not known

• Half-life. There is no PubMed abstract with human pharmacokinetics. Numbers quoted online are not traceable to a study I could find.
• How fast anxiety itself drops. Not measured.
• Whether the week-long carry-over holds up. It comes from one small Russian trial.
• Dose. The English abstracts of the clinical trials do not state it.
