Selank vs Xanax: A Peptide That Calms Without Sedation?

Xanax works. That was never the problem. The problem is the sedation, the memory gaps, and what happens when you try to stop.
Selank is a Russian peptide sold as the answer to that: the calm without the cost. Here is what the research supports and what it does not.
Has Selank been compared with Xanax?
No. There is no trial of Selank against alprazolam.
It has been compared with two other benzodiazepines, medazepam and phenazepam. Those are the closest evidence there is.
The three trials
- Against medazepam. 62 patients with generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia. 30 got Selank and 32 got medazepam. The anti-anxiety effects were similar. Selank also had anti-fatigue and stimulating effects that the benzodiazepine did not. (Zozulia 2008)
- Against phenazepam. 60 patients with phobic-anxiety and somatoform disorders. Selank showed a pronounced anti-anxiety effect and a mild nootropic effect, and the calming effect lasted a week after the last dose. (Medvedev 2014)
- Added to phenazepam. 70 patients. 30 took phenazepam alone and 40 took it with Selank. The combination reduced the benzodiazepine's side effects: attention and memory problems, weakness, sedation, longer sleep, sexual problems and emotional flatness, both during treatment and after the tranquilizer was stopped. (Medvedev 2015)
Why it might not sedate
Benzodiazepines bind to the GABA receptor and turn its signal up directly. That is why they work in minutes and why they sedate.
- Selank appears to act on GABA receptors too, but at a different site from diazepam, as a modulator. (Vyunova 2018)
- It also slows the breakdown of enkephalins, the body's own calming opioid peptides, which were found to be short-lived in people with generalized anxiety. (Zozulya 2001)
- In rats under chronic stress, Selank plus diazepam reduced anxiety better than either alone. (Kasian 2017)
The honest part
- Three trials, about 190 patients, all Russian, no placebo arm in the abstracts, no independent replication.
- No trial against Xanax, and none in panic disorder, where Xanax is most used.
- No long-term data on Selank at all.
- Selank is not an approved medicine in the US or EU. What is sold online is an unregulated research chemical.
And the part that matters most: do not stop a benzodiazepine on your own because of an article. Stopping suddenly can cause seizures. Any change to a prescription goes through the doctor who wrote it.
What I would look at first
In my view a lot of anxiety is a body running on stress hormones: low blood sugar, low salt, bad sleep, an inflamed gut. I would fix those before reaching for any compound. Start with how to lower serotonin and how to fix leaky gut.

Quick answers
Is Selank better than Xanax?
They have never been compared in a trial. Selank was compared with the benzodiazepines medazepam and phenazepam in small Russian studies, where its anti-anxiety effect was similar without sedation.
Does Selank work like a benzodiazepine?
Not exactly. Researchers propose it modulates GABA receptors at a different site from benzodiazepines and slows the breakdown of enkephalins.
Can Selank replace Xanax?
There is no evidence for that, and stopping a benzodiazepine abruptly is dangerous. Changes to a prescription should be made with the prescribing doctor.
Does Selank cause withdrawal?
None of the published abstracts reports dependence or withdrawal, but there are no long-term studies.
Does Selank make you tired?
In the trials it was described as having anti-fatigue and stimulating effects, and it reduced benzodiazepine sedation when the two were combined.
