In rats, BPC-157 works. Gut, tendon, ligament, muscle: study after study shows faster and better healing.
In people, nobody really knows yet. About 30 people have been studied in total, and none of those studies had a placebo group.
Both of those are true at the same time. I take it anyway, and I will tell you why at the end. First, the evidence, one area at a time.
Does BPC 157 work? The scorecard
- Gut and stomach lining: strong in rats. This is where it comes from and where most of the research is.
- Tendons, ligaments, muscle: strong in rats, including by mouth.
- Blood flow and new blood vessels: shown in rats and in human cells in a dish.
- Kidneys: one rat study.
- Joint pain and bladder pain in people: two small studies with no control group.
- Hair growth: no published study. Only cases people share online, some of them by me.
- Dopamine: rat studies only.
What does BPC 157 do?
BPC-157 is a peptide of 15 amino acids, first isolated from human gastric juice. That is where the name comes from: body protection compound. (Józwiak 2025)
Its best studied action is on blood vessels. In my view that one mechanism explains most of what it does.
In rats with a blocked leg artery, BPC-157 brought blood flow back faster and grew more vessels. In human vessel cells it raised a receptor called VEGFR2 and switched on the VEGFR2-Akt-eNOS pathway, the one that makes nitric oxide and new capillaries. (Hsieh 2017)
Tendons and ligaments heal slowly because they have very little blood supply. A compound that brings blood to the injury is exactly what they lack.
Does BPC 157 work for the gut?
In rats, very consistently.
- Stomach lining. It protected rats' stomachs against alcohol, restraint stress and the painkiller indomethacin, at doses of 10 micrograms and 10 nanograms per kg. (Sikirić 1996)
- Fistulas. In rats with an open channel from the colon to the skin, it healed both the colon and the skin defect, given by injection or in drinking water. The steroid used for comparison made healing worse. (Klicek 2008)
- Colitis from lost blood supply. Applied to a colon segment with its vessels tied off, it quickly restored blood flow and opened collateral vessels. By day 10 the mucosa was almost completely spared. (Duzel 2017)
A bloated gut is an inflamed gut, and an inflamed gut drags down your energy and your mood. That is why the gut is the first reason I use it. The full gut story is in BPC-157 for leaky gut.
Does BPC 157 work for tendons, ligaments and muscle?
This is the part athletes care about, and the rat results are strong.
- Achilles tendon. After the tendon was cut, untreated rats healed poorly. Treated rats bore more load before the tendon failed, walked better and closed the defect, up to full tendon integrity, within 14 days. (Staresinic 2003)
- Knee ligament. Over 90 days after a cut ligament, it improved healing given by injection, as a thin cream on the injury, or in drinking water. (Cerovecki 2010)
- Muscle, even on steroids. A steroid drug made crushed muscle heal worse. BPC-157 gave faster healing and full return of function, and it completely reversed the damage the steroid did to healing. (Pevec 2010)
A 2025 systematic review found the same pattern across 35 preclinical studies: better function, structure and strength in muscle, tendon, ligament and bone injuries. (Vasireddi 2025)
The routes and their differences are in oral BPC-157 vs injection.
Does BPC 157 work in humans?
There are three small studies. Here is all of it.
- Bladder pain. 12 women with interstitial cystitis, none helped by the approved drug, got BPC-157 injected around the inflamed bladder in one procedure. 10 reported complete resolution of symptoms and 2 reported 80%. No adverse events. (Lee 2024)
- Knee pain. A clinic looked back at 16 patients who had a knee injection. 11 of the 12 who got BPC-157 alone reported significant improvement. No measuring tools were used, only a phone survey. (Lee 2021)
- Safety. 2 adults got 10 mg and then 20 mg by intravenous infusion. Their heart, liver, kidney, thyroid and blood sugar markers did not change. (Lee 2025)
The results look great. The designs are weak. No placebo, no blinding, tiny numbers, and patients rating themselves.
Even the reading changes the result. The systematic review above counts that same knee study as 7 of 12 patients with relief lasting more than 6 months.
Does BPC 157 work for hair growth?
I have shared several cases. A man who switched from finasteride to BPC-157 on his scalp. Another who added BPC-157, GHK-Cu and TB-500 after a year of finasteride did nothing, and got much denser hair.
My reasoning is the blood vessel mechanism. Hair follicles need blood flow, and BPC-157 drives new capillaries through VEGFR2. I believe that will change how hair loss is treated.
But I have to be straight with you. I searched PubMed and found no published study of BPC-157 on hair, in animals or in people. Before and after photos are not a trial. The hair options with real evidence are in the hair loss guide.
What else has BPC 157 done in rats?
- Kidneys. Rats given a high dose of the antibiotic gentamicin for 8 days got kidney damage. With BPC-157, in water or by injection, urea and creatinine stayed close to normal and the kidney tubules looked normal under the microscope. (Vukoja 2026)
- Amphetamine. A single dose of BPC-157, given with the first amphetamine shot, reduced the stereotyped behavior amphetamine causes in rats. The effect held through later amphetamine challenges up to day 46. (Sikirić 2002) The dopamine side is in BPC-157, dopamine and Adderall.
I have also shared dogs that recovered from surgery much faster than their vets expected. Those are stories, not studies.
How long does BPC 157 take to work?
There is no human answer. No study has timed it in people.
In the rat tendon study, the differences showed up within the first two weeks. The ligament study ran for 90 days.
It leaves the blood fast. In rats and dogs its half-life was under 30 minutes, and it breaks down into ordinary amino acids. (He 2022) The healing effects in the animal studies lasted far longer than that.
The honest part
- It is almost all rats. A 2019 review of the soft tissue research found every study positive, but most in small rodents, efficacy not yet confirmed in humans, and only a handful of research groups doing the work. (Gwyer 2019)
- Three pilots are not proof. A 2025 review counts only three human studies and concludes BPC-157 should be considered investigational until well-designed trials are done. (McGuire 2025)
- Placebo is real here. A 2026 sports medicine review discusses the placebo effect as a driver of how well peptides seem to work, and how social media amplifies it. (Mendias 2026) That includes accounts like mine.
- Human claims are unproven. A 2026 scoping review of six popular peptides concludes the claimed recovery benefits remain unsubstantiated by human trials. (Tewari 2026)
- The product is a risk. It is not FDA approved and is sold through unregulated sources. Reviewers list contamination, manufacturing impurities and inaccurate dosing, plus theoretical risks like unwanted blood vessel growth. (Moiz 2026)
If you are pregnant, have a history of cancer or take prescription drugs, talk to your doctor before you try any research peptide.
Why I still take it
Because the animal evidence is unusually consistent, the human pilots reported no side effects, and it fits how I see health: blood flow, a calm gut, less inflammation.
I take 2 capsules in the morning, 500 micrograms each. That is my choice, not a tested human dose. The study doses are in BPC-157 dosage.
And the first peptide I tell anyone to take is beef gelatin. BPC-157 comes after the basics: enough carbs, salt, gelatin and a gut that moves.

Quick answers
Does BPC 157 work?
In rats, consistently: it sped up healing of the stomach, colon, tendons, ligaments and muscle in study after study. In humans it has only been tested in three small pilot studies with no placebo group, so it is unproven.
What does BPC 157 do?
It is a 15 amino acid peptide from human gastric juice. In animal and cell studies it grows new blood vessels through the VEGFR2 pathway, restores blood flow to injured tissue and speeds healing of the gut and soft tissues.
Does BPC 157 work in humans?
Three pilot studies exist: 12 women with bladder pain, 16 knee pain patients surveyed by phone, and 2 adults in a safety test. Results were positive and no side effects were reported, but none had a control group.
Does BPC 157 work for hair growth?
There is no published study of BPC-157 on hair. The idea rests on its blood vessel effects and on individual before and after cases shared online.
How long does BPC 157 take to work?
No human study has measured it. In rats, tendon healing differences appeared within 14 days. Its half-life in rats and dogs is under 30 minutes, but its effects in animal studies lasted much longer.
Is BPC 157 safe?
Unknown in humans. Animal studies and the three small human pilots reported no adverse effects, but there is no proper clinical safety data. It is not FDA approved, and unregulated products can be contaminated or mislabelled.
