Taurine Benefits: What the Human Trials Show, and Where the Hype Runs Ahead

Taurine has real human evidence for blood pressure, blood sugar, triglycerides and endurance. The evidence for brain fog is weak, even though that is the claim that travels furthest.
I take it and I like it. I also posted the brain fog claim myself. So here is all of it, including the part that does not flatter my own posts.
What is taurine?
Taurine is an amino acid that is found in mammalian tissues but is not used to build proteins. Your body makes some, and you get the rest from meat, seafood and dairy. It is also in energy drinks, which is where most people meet it.
Taurine benefits: what the studies show
- Metabolic markers. A meta-analysis of 25 randomized trials with 1,024 participants used 0.5 to 6 g a day. Taurine lowered systolic blood pressure by about 4 mmHg, diastolic by 1.5 mmHg, fasting glucose by 5.9 mg/dL and triglycerides by 18.3 mg/dL. HDL did not change. (Tzang 2024)
- Diabetes. In 5 trials with 209 diabetic patients, taurine reduced HbA1c, fasting blood sugar and insulin resistance. It had no significant effect on their lipids, blood pressure or body composition. (Tao 2022)
- Endurance. A meta-analysis of 10 studies found that 1 to 6 g of taurine improved endurance performance by a small to moderate amount. A single dose worked as well as two weeks of use, and the size of the dose made no difference. (Waldron 2018)
- Aging, in animals. Blood taurine falls with age in mice, monkeys and humans. Giving it back extended life span in mice and health span in monkeys. (Singh 2023)
Taurine benefits for men
- Testosterone, in rats. Taurine in the drinking water raised LH and testosterone in male rats of different ages. It improved sperm motility in adult rats, and sperm count and motility in aged rats. (Yang 2010)
- The dose cuts both ways, in cells. In cultured rat Leydig cells, low concentrations of taurine stimulated testosterone secretion and a high concentration inhibited it. (Yang 2010b)
- Heart failure. 29 patients, 26 of them men, took 500 mg three times a day or a placebo for 2 weeks. Exercise time and distance increased on taurine and did not on placebo. (Beyranvand 2011)
I searched PubMed for a randomized trial of taurine and testosterone in men and found none. The testosterone claim rests on rats.
Taurine and brain fog
This is the one I posted about, so I went back to the source.
- The study behind my post. 26 elderly Koreans with subjective memory complaints ate a jelly with 3 g of taurine for 4 weeks. Their scores on digit span, naming and verbal learning tests were higher after than before. Their overall cognitive screening score did not change significantly. The comparison was before against after, not against a placebo. (Bae 2022)
- The pooled trials. A meta-analysis of 7 randomized trials with 402 people found no significant effect of taurine on cognitive scores. (Cao 2025)
- Single doses in healthy people. A review of 8 trials with 244 participants found that 1 to 3 g produced small and inconsistent effects at best. Most outcomes showed nothing. (Moore 2026)
- Energy drinks. In 48 habitual caffeine users, caffeine improved working memory and reaction time. The authors concluded that caffeine, not taurine, is likely behind the mental effects of energy drinks. (Giles 2012)
So "3 g a day for a month improved memory" is true for that one small study and not confirmed by the controlled ones.
My view is different from what the trials tested. I think taurine helps through the gut: more bile acids, a stronger gut barrier and less inflammation. It helps my digestion. I think a lot of brain fog starts there. That is my experience and my opinion, and the plan is in How to fix leaky gut.
Taurine dosage per day
The trials above used 0.5 to 6 g a day.
A formal risk assessment found strong evidence of no adverse effects at supplemental intakes up to 3 g a day, and called that the observed safe level. Higher intakes have been tested without problems, but the authors did not consider the data enough to confirm long-term safety. (Shao 2008)
What I do: 2 to 5 g when I use it. Sometimes 5 g in coffee with sugar two hours before training. Sometimes in a bottle with salt and potassium that I sip through the day. My dose is above the observed safe level, and that is my choice, not a recommendation.
Taurine and creatine
Only one small study has tested the pair. 12 sports students did exhausting exercise at 35 °C and 65% humidity after taking a placebo, taurine, creatine or both. Time to exhaustion was longer with both than with placebo. Repeated sprint performance did not improve with either or both. (Yu 2025)
Nothing in it suggests the two interfere. Nothing proves they are better together either.
Taurine side effects
- The 25-trial meta-analysis found no significant adverse effects compared with control.
- An earlier meta-analysis of 7 studies and 103 participants, at 1 to 6 g a day for up to 12 weeks, reported no adverse events. (Waldron 2018b)
- The risk assessment found no consistent pattern of adverse effects in humans.
Taurine lowers blood pressure a little. If you take blood pressure medication, or have kidney disease, ask your doctor. Problems blamed on energy drinks come with caffeine and other ingredients, so they tell you little about taurine alone.
The honest part
- The aging story is contested. In 137 men aged 20 to 93, blood taurine was not associated with age, muscle mass, strength, physical performance or mitochondrial function. (Marcangeli 2025)
- Life span was extended in mice and worms, not in people.
- The effects are modest. Four points of blood pressure is real and small.
- The trials are short. Follow-up ranged from 5 to 365 days.
- The controlled cognitive trials are negative.
What I do
I use taurine as a tool for training and for my gut, not as a miracle. And yes, I drink Red Bull. It has taurine, B vitamins and sugar, and I am fine with that.
It sits on top of the basics: enough carbohydrate, salt, sleep and no seed oils. Those are in the pro-metabolic diet.
Quick answers
What are the benefits of taurine?
A meta-analysis of 25 randomized trials found that taurine lowered systolic blood pressure by about 4 mmHg, fasting glucose by 5.9 mg/dL and triglycerides by 18.3 mg/dL. Another meta-analysis found a small to moderate improvement in endurance performance.
What are the benefits of taurine for men?
In rats, taurine raised LH and testosterone and improved sperm quality. There is no randomized trial of taurine and testosterone in men. In a small heart failure trial that was mostly men, taurine improved exercise capacity.
How much taurine per day?
Trials used 0.5 to 6 g a day. A risk assessment identified 3 g a day as the observed safe level for healthy adults, meaning the evidence for no adverse effects is strong up to that intake.
What are the side effects of taurine?
Meta-analyses of randomized trials found no significant adverse effects at 1 to 6 g a day. Taurine lowers blood pressure slightly, so people on blood pressure medication should ask a doctor.
Does taurine help brain fog?
One uncontrolled study in 26 elderly people found better memory test scores after 3 g a day for 4 weeks. A meta-analysis of 7 randomized trials with 402 people found no significant effect on cognition.
Can you take taurine and creatine together?
One small study in 12 sports students found longer time to exhaustion in the heat with both than with placebo, and no improvement in repeated sprints. Nothing in it suggests the two interfere.
