PubMed: Effects of potassium citrate or potassium chloride in patients with combined glucose intolerance: A placebo-controlled pilot study

To test if potassium improves insulin sensitivity,
a double blind, placebo controlled study gave 11 subjects 3.5g oral potassium chloride or citrate per day for 2 weeks.
the results?

Baseline HOMA-IR which is (Glucose x Insulin)/405 was 3.3 which indicates insulin resistance.
only potassium citrate was able to push it down to 2.8.

Whole body insulin sensitivity index (ISI)
Is measured by giving patients 75g glucose and testing blood glucose and insulin at 30m 60m 90m 120m
only potassium citrate improved the score to 5.5

QUICKI = 1/[log(insulin) + log(glucose)]
potassium citrate improved the score to 0.345

this shows clearly that potassium plays a crucial role in insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
although potassium citrate shows better results I still think that potassium chloride is beneficial.
good sources for potassium are coffee, coconut water and cacao.
