PubMed: Saccharomyces boulardii Allows Partial Patients to Avoid Reusing Bismuth Quadruple for Helicobacter pylori Rescue Therapy: A Single-Center Randomized Controlled Study

100 H.pylori infected patients were randomly divided into two groups to see if supplementing S.Boulardii alone can treat H.pylroi infection.

30% of the patients that got S.Boulardii for two weeks had complete eradication of the H.pylori infection.

The standard treatment for H.pylori infection is Bismuth Quadruple protocol which contains:

Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) to reduce stomach acid, creating a less acidic environment that stabilizes antibiotics and "promotes bacterial replication".
Bismuth compound – typically bismuth subsalicylate or bismuth subcitrate, taken 3–4 times daily. Bismuth disrupts bacterial cell walls, inhibits enzymes, and prevents adherence to the stomach lining.
Tetracycline – 500 mg, taken four times daily, to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis
Metronidazole – 500 mg, taken 3–4 times daily to damages bacterial DNA and works synergistically with tetracycline.

This can be an effective treatment, but is an over-kill sometimes and can be harsh on the patients, this study suggests that in 30% of the patients, a simpler and much cheaper alternative exists.

S.Boulardii vs placebo for 2 weeks.

second stage of study followed up with Bismuth Quadruple protocol which is shown to be very effective for treating the infection.
